  • Mostly Great

The design is really accessible and basic which makes writing a breeze. The only downside is that you need to pay to be able to add more than one photo per entry. That's just ludicrous. You should be able to add at least two. One photo can't always summarize all that you did in one day.
  • Journaling: the ONLY choice

This IS the best journaling app. Its free to try, go for it! The developers make extremely regular updates, improving functionality so much.
  • Beware, privacy is an illusion

Use of this app requires storing your private journals on their servers. There is no option to store it separately in an encrypted fashion on Google drive, or other storage site.

I purchased and paid for a lifetime subscription of Day One when it was called Day one classic. I can no longer access the paid version of the app or my past journals because the developer just took day one classic off the apple store completely. Why? I’m disappointed that the developer won’t honor the past payments of customers who discovered the app back in its lesser known infancy.
  • Latest update didn’t fix notifications for me.

In the most recent update, the version notes said the issue where badge app icons didn’t appear was fixed. I have a reminder notification set up in Day One for 7:30 PM. I get the notification, but never a badge. I have badges enabled for Day One in my notification settings. If this isn’t fixed for much longer I may abandon Day One, even having used it for years.
  • Regarding the newest update

I’d like to note that I have been using Day One as my personal digital diary on and off for the past two years, and I like using this app. I am a Plus user but upgraded to Premium to try out the new drawing feature, thinking that I might be able to hand-write my journals. If you are like me, this newest update is not going to satisfy you. The drawing should be left at that, drawing. For writing it lacks many critical features: 1. No eraser. Only undo / redo options. This is frustrating. 2. No highlighting function or a way to draw a straight line for underlining words. 3. No smart touch rejection. Whatever I touch on the drawing board is recognized as an input and I frequently had to keep ‘undo’ing my mistaken touches. 4. No way to add more pages to keep on writing once you are out of space. When you are done and exit out of the drawing mode, whatever you drew / wrote is saved as an image to your journal. When you try to edit the image to add more stuff (like, maybe you weren’t done writing), the image is automatically centered, leaving white space on top and bottom, making it impossible to keep on writing like a normal paper. 5. Writing is not smooth. There seems to be nothing done whatsoever in the app to smooth out writing like many note-taking apps do (notability for example). It’s very jaggy and just not clean-looking. I’ll stick to typing as a way to write my journals and hope the developers make handwriting feature more of a thing — that would entice me to stay as a Premium user. For now, I have no other features in Premium service that would make me want to be a Premium user, so I will be ending my free trial and continue using the app as before.
  • Social media integrations disappointing

I feel conflicted about giving this app only 3 stars. I appreciate support for end-to-end encryption (even if it currently disables IFTTT integrations for journals with it turned on), multiple journals, typography options, etc. But I feel like data from Swarm, Twitter, Instagram, Spotify, etc could be presented much more richly than it is currently. Since journaling really takes place across many apps and services, I feel it’s important for Day One to enhance the presentation of this external data.

Been a few weeks since I used Dayone on an iPad. Really pleased to see this excellent app take on drawing features, and even more pleased that I can now use a full screen view for writing entries. It’s the small things... 😍

I got the app a while back when Apple gifted it during their anniversary. Idk if it was a premium substance but I recently opened the app and it is quite different from what it used to be, and my all my previous entries are gone. I acquiesced with the changes since it has been quite sometime now, plus it is a business after all. They can’t just be giving away free full-features. It cost money to run a business. I started getting excited on what you can do with the app especially with the music feature but only to find out that it does not sync with Amazon Prime Music. I am guessing you can only sync it with Apple Music? I have my Apple Music disabled since I prefer Amazon. It would be nice if the developers can change this. I think the app needs to be a more user friendly-app. Nevertheless, it is a great app.
