  • Argumentative Customer Service

The VPN stopped connecting 2 days after I paid the subscription. I asked for a refund And that led to days of argumentative emails from customer support.

The app barely works on iOS, most servers are constantly down. I have to force close and reopen the app several times or else it will just be on a gray “disconnected” screen that I can’t even interact with. When selecting a location half the time it won’t select and does nothing. You can’t stop the reconnecting no matter what, so be prepared to lose all connection for 5-10 minutes while the firewall is on. Super frustrating, wish I never got it on iOS.

Windscribe is a modest VPN. I only use it for geo-blocked content. For much else, there are others that do it better with more options. My gripe is a lack of updates. As of my review, this app has not been updated in 8 months. Keeping in mind that it is just a VPN app, I still think that in 8 months they could have changed something. This is part of a larger trend I've seen with their tools: lack of updates and optimizations. For example, the Firefox add-on for Windscribe has not been updated in a similar time to this app, and even causes start up problems on the browser. It is for reasons like this that I don't feel super confident in the quality of this VPN. Their back end work might be amazing, but consumers are truly oriented to a fitting and equal UX and UI.

It works in general, has a decent set of servers around the world and pricing is reasonable, so the VPN service is fine, but the apps (both iOS and mac) are lame. The main issue is how it wants to reconnect automatically. It’s a good feature to have, but it works poorly, often preventing a device to connect to a network, if some verification or action to be done and that’s common in public wi-fi places, right when you need VPN. Often the entire device becomes unresponsive when the app is retrieving list of servers, you can’t even turn the connection off at this point. The other big issue is lack of proper favorites, it causes many aggravations, and complicates how iOS can use VPN. And there are many small annoyances, that are not critical, but since there are so many of them it makes the app way less attractive.

Pretty sure this app tried to hack my email address. Entered just a simple username with no email attached and INSTANTLY got a notification about my email sign-in was blocked.
