Downloaded this app & didn't enable any notifications, but selected my favorite team. The app enabled "live activities" without my permission, which resulted in me getting spoiled on my lock screen for a game I couldn't watch live. Absolutely ludicrous how every sports app seems to default to spoiling scores until you opt out.

I need to change my payment (reissued credit card) no place on the app to do that
  • Open your free article

In the last week or two I’ve been getting numerous emails that offer a free article on a sports subject. But when I try to open it, I get a full page of subscription information instead!!! And no way out of the page! This happened on many many emails. Surely you understand that either you’re tricking people or lying to people, or both! Please change this system!!
  • Good, but it tries to do too much

I enjoy reading and occasionally commenting on stories, This is one of the best features of the app. But now I can’t access comments on my tablet because the link is blocked by a window that shows a baseball score from three days ago. There are plenty of ways to access scores without blocking features.
  • Pushes Notifications When Turned Off in Settings

Turned off Notifcations in Settings>Notifications>The Athletic. Still pushes notifications of any subject I follow in the app. When you click on the subject you follow, it shows all the notifications turned on but on top a message says “Notifcations are turned off for this app. Please enable them in Settings to Continue.” I had to turn off “background refresh” off, and manually turn off each notification in the app. That’s four per subject.
  • You pay for the service, they give you ads.

I shouldn’t be distracted by video ads on an app for a service I pay for.
  • More Ads than Content!

Giant ads take up more than 50% of the screen area in articles. Crazy considering how expensive a subscription is.

It is just about average for similar sports apps. I get it as a part of my NY Times subscription so I keep use it.

    1. You can feel the app repositioning towards maximizing your time on it. Now instead of only having articles about my interests, it displays all the sports big headlines. It used to be geared to what I wanted exactly. Now it’s a soup of interests and I have to click on my interests to navigate to that content. 2. They got rid of several podcasts. One example of this is the Roundtable. The round table was different. Grant Bisbee and Company talked about baseball but also the perspective of covering baseball. Each week it felt like an ad hot conversation of three guys coming from the most inside perspective of baseball coming together and chatting about topics that truly informed and changed my opinion about ways to look at baseball. It was an incredible show – probably the best baseball show I’ve ever heard. Unceremoniously people had to ask in the comment session if it was happening this year. I believe it was Grant Brisby, who gave the notification from one of the hundred questions about the roundtable that came. I guess I don’t make enough money on Podcasts. Canceled. It was a pretty great app and now it’s just fairly good.
