Description

For beginners and experienced meditators alike, Waking Up is for anyone who understands that meditation should transform one's view of the world. WHY IS WAKING UP DIFFERENT FROM OTHER MEDITATION APPS? *Meditation is often taught as though it were an ancient version of an executive stress ball. But it’s more like the Large Hadron Collider. Waking Up users quickly understand that there are fundamental discoveries to be made in the laboratory of their own minds. *Waking Up guides you through a 50-day introductory course before unlocking access to an ongoing series of daily meditations. If you’re a novice, you need this. (And if you’re an experienced meditator, you probably do, too.) All meditations are created and led by Sam Harris. *Waking Up also contains a growing curriculum of short talks by Sam Harris on a wide variety of topics relevant for deepening your practice. *Waking Up never resorts to gimmicks or pseudoscience. The app contains only what you need to make fundamental insights into the nature of your mind. “I’ve been incredibly impressed with this app. Whether you want to sharpen your mind or experience more peace, this can help in dramatic fashion. The power of its progression is hard to overstate.” — Tim Ferriss Tim Ferriss is an early-stage investor in technology companies and the author of five #1 New York Times best-sellers, including The 4-Hour Workweek and Tools of Titans. He hosts the popular podcast, The Tim Ferriss Show. ABOUT SAM HARRIS Sam Harris is the author of five New York Times best sellers, including Waking Up: A Guide to Spirituality Without Religion. His writing and public lectures cover a wide range of topics—neuroscience, meditation, moral philosophy, religion, rationality—but generally focus on how a growing understanding of ourselves and the world is changing our sense of how we should live. Sam received a degree in philosophy from Stanford University and a Ph.D. in neuroscience from UCLA. He has practiced meditation for over 30 years and has studied with many Tibetan, Indian, Burmese, and Western meditation teachers, both in the United States and abroad. I was a consistent meditator years ago but fell out of practice. Sam’s coursework and guidance have been reinvigorating so far and I’m already noticing a steady return to mindfulness in my day. And I’m only in day 3 of the course. :)

No woo woo or weird stuff. Just a calm and instructive voice helping you to be aware of what your mind is doing. It may not sound like much, but the difference it makes is significant.

This app is simple and easy to use. His guided meditations as well as his lessons (separate category) are based in his many years of study and expertise in vypassana and Dzogchen.

Somehow this app hit the right balance of rich content yet ease of use. There’s no clutter, and the “Daily Meditation” is such a simple and excellent idea - each day a new meditation just for that day. I find myself motivated by this so much because I’m naturally curious about today’s meditation which won’t be available on another day. It draws me forward each day yet with out guilt or baggage if I do miss a day. Very elegant in this design and Sam really delivers consistently quality guided meditations.

I am very grateful to Sam and the team who put this app together and continue to maintain it. It is very user-friendly, and I look forward to doing the meditations every morning. The app has helped me to develop a very healthy habit that I think will improve the quality of my life and those of the people I interact with.

If you (like me) have never tried meditation, or even if you have, I cannot recommend this app enough. Sam does a wonderful job walking you through the practice. It’s hard to overstate how positively impactful this app has been in my life. It is well worth your time and money!
  • The Sky of the Mind

Sam’s framework of the “Sky of the Mind” is one of the most practically useful tools of this app. Unlike other meditation apps I’ve used, this one allows a level of unparalleled self-engagement. Sam weaves his philosophy into the experience, leaving the meditator free to explore and experiment with his ideas as opposed to using the app as a medium to preach those ideas. The context this app gives to his larger body of work has allowed me a fuller appreciation for Sam’s philosophical approach. Perhaps the greatest takeaway for me was to be able to use this app as a supplement for quitting cigarette use. About a year ago, I experimented with psilocybin to jolt me out of my addiction to nicotine. This worked to a certain extent, but my cravings for nicotine were creeping back. When this app was released, I used meditation to keep those nicotine cravings at bay. This app has been instrumental in that fight and I’m happy to say I’ve been cigarette free for about a year now. The last thing I want to say about this app is that it is not an app for atheists. If you’ve read Sam’s work or heard him speak and didn’t agree with it, that should not be a deterrent from using this app. My fiancé is a devout catholic and meditates to Sam every day, and so far has not gone up in flames for doing so. Seriously though, she finds absolutely not conflict between her beliefs and the teachings in this course. I highly recommend this app for practical reasons; Sam truly invests himself in his work and in the pursuit of wellbeing and you will be a better person for taking this course.

Sam does an incredible job of keeping it interesting while still challenging the listener to deepen their practice. I am so excited about this app!

Awesome and straight forward. Not made to be trendy. A very effective tool taught exactly how it should be. I’m on day 31 and the sessions and lessons really help me with the distractions I have to deal with on a day to day basis. Really transfers over to how I handle things. How interpret emotions and differentiating things that need my attention vs things that don’t really. Thank you!
