I don't trust this app or the folks who peddle it. I've used the Carly BT dongle and app on a number of vehicles and the final straw that made me toss this into the garbage was when we pulled a report from my son's 2008 Jetta and it reported historical information and implied the information was current (obvious subscription upsell tactic), but here's the worst part: Th Jetta had a P071 lean code (very common O2/MAF or maybe air filter). That code is very common and is nothing to get worked up over. Except Carly didn't even identify it as a code, it gave us a Christmas decoration report with a bunch of "critical" and "severe" codes that were all either historical, or just plain false. CARLY DID NOT IDENTIFY THE ACTUAL P0171 CODE! Of course, to "fix" all these historical and false codes all we need to do is pay Carly's subscription fee. I actually did use the paid subscription a year or so ago, it wouldn't work with my vehicle (200 series Land Cruiser). When I used it on our Tacoma, it didn't do anything I couldn't just do through the vehicle settings screen. Basically, just go to your local autoparts store and buy yourself a $30 ODBII reader. That, and a computer with internet access, is all you will ever need. Most of the "extra control" stuff that Carly peddles either wont work on your make and model, or it just won't work at all. The output does not clearly identify historical codes and the output contains codes that are often false. I think all the hype and positive reviews are a combination of paid-reviews combined with a whole lot of non-mechanics who are bedazzled by the pretty lights and colors that app has and how the app creates false issues for the proposes of selling subscriptions. I suspect the developers have become a bit too greedy. Since the developers have basically turned the app into a scam, the actual dongle is worthless as well. It doesn't even read codes correctly from one of the most common vehicles in the world: a Mark 5 VW Jetta.
  • Completely worthless on BMWs

TL;DR Don’t waste your money on this tool. I have tried to use Carly on E series and G series BMWs and the results have been largely useless. Carly will show a multitude of issues, and many will be just made up issues. For example, Carly will give you error codes that do not even exist. They are quite literally Carly hallucinations. Additionally, Carly will show issues for features that were never part of the car, for example, indicating there were errors trying to communicate with iDrive, yet on the E series car being scanned, it doesn’t include iDrive. I really wish this tool was worth just half the amount I spent on it.

I know what to repair so I can do it myself and save thousands on BMW maintenance
  • Smart Mechanic is killing the app

Been using it for years but now cannot even pull the simplest codes. Keeps trying to load smart mechanic, which for some reason doesn’t work. Unable to do what it’s build for, pulling codes. Who even needs smart mechanic, and why is it required to pull the codes. Will cancel my subscription.

I have been using Carly for years. Over the years it has enhanced its product and app to go belong coding and diagnostics. I don’t use its SmartMechanics feature, as I often search for information online via YouTube and BMW forums. Its customer service remains excellent once one get over the initial barrier to open a support case. I am not so fond of filling a second google form with similar information filled out in its online portal. I guess it becomes a necessity when its customer base grew. I reduced one star due to the tedious filing process. I purchased its OBD2 Gen 2 device three years ago. Recently, it does not allow me to reset oil change service indicator. I reached out to its customer support and was offered to replace my OBD2 with its latest OBD2 device. I was quite impressed by its life-time warranty coverage. There was no hassle to complete the warranty process. I am very glad Carly continues its excellent support.
  • Very limited on 2020 BMW 3 series

This is for the paid version. There is very limited ECU coverage for my 2020 BMW 330 ix series. My older 2015 BMW 5 series has very good coverage. I know that the competitive sw has much better coverage. I have not seen any 3 series updates in a year.

I had bought their OBD+app package from their website because it will read/write Toyotas and read only Mazdas. Cool. One of the primary reasons I bought this app was it would customize aspects of the Prius, not the least of which is the annoying backup beep. Other apps will do this but not many will read both Toyota and Mazda. Changing beep failed; app recommended using “slow mode” and trying again. Never got around to it for several months. Finally went back to it. App says that I should update it because car info at this point is inaccurate. Updated. Now the app says that it no longer does customizations with no forewarning that I was going to lose that ability info updated. Secondly, while trying to set up for my Mazda. Auto-detect failed, so I had to manually go through telling it all kinds of things about my car. Started asking me cryptic questions about the engine and transmission that even my mechanic had no idea what the app was asking for. Contacted support about what these questions mean, and I got all kinds of unsatisfactory answers that never answered my direct questions about what their own app was asking like they didn’t know themselves, so how am I supposed to know how to answer the questions and know that the data I got back from the car would be accurate? This was a waste of a lot of money buying the app+OBD from their site (note, when I did this the terms were “not refundable”). I will not be renewing my subscription. **Edit—response to developer response: I don’t have an active support ticket anymore. We exchanged emails multiple times where I tried to get a reasonable answer to my reasonable questions. You had your chance.

I bought the Carly device and premium subscription because they clearly advertise on their website that it is easy to use for BMW battery registration. Initially, it did not work. I eventually got it to work, no thanks to their product literature or customer service response. Be warned: you are largely on your own to make it perform.

Yearly renewals that hide behind fine print. Scummy company that would not refund or cancel charges even when pending. No support. Would never buy again.
  • Don’t buy it

Don’t fall into the trap they are scammers they will make you buy the app buy the adapter and buy a yearly subscription. Go buy your self a snap on scanner for $200 is cheaper then this. U can probably get an even better scanner that reads all car brand codes for just a little over $200. I’ve paid almost $160 then they made the price now $90 a year.
