A must companion on the AT. Helpful do milage, altitude, next shelter and water sources. Quick and easy referencing. Very intuitive with up to date information on the trail.
  • No GPX export??

Wow, bought a section of the AT and then learned I can’t export routes to my GPS watch. Are you kidding. That’s crazy and makes this borderline useless.
  • I don’t hit the trail without it.

This app was crucial to planning trips in this area. I thought it was really cool that somehow I could even use it to track my location on the route in real time when my phone signal strength was down to “SOS only”. Very helpful app and love that users can posts comments on the route to offer their experience at specific points.

Honestly the only app to use for the AZT. Comments can save peoples lives about water sources.

I have purchased several of the guides, and even hiked with the founder on the PCT in 2010. I purchased the complete CDT guide and when I attempted to use it a few years later, they said I would need to provide proof. The purchase did not show in my purchase history on the Apple App Store, but I was able to find a receipt in my email. But only for the NM section, as I purchased sections as I hiked. Far out would not restore the purchase, even though they should have documentation, or they could contact the Apple App Store to figure out what’s going wrong on their end. This was not my problem, but became my problem. I will not purchase another FarOut app in the future.
  • Major fixes needed

I used this app on the John Muir Trail, honestly it worked great, that is until about 5 days or so of using it when all of the sudden the entire app would just freeze whenever I’d click anywhere on the screen. Even after refreshing my phone multiple times it still did the same thing and even after the most recent update it’s still doing it, has anyone else had this problem? It’s a bummer because I will say the app was working, it does sound like a lot of bugs could be fixed based on other peoples reviews. Until these problem are solved there are certainly much more reliable apps to be used for navigation, hopefully these comments provide an incentive.

In a few words, I can’t trust this app anymore. Full stop. I lasted hiked just as they switched over from Guthook (man, what a fantastic app) and I have a few days planned this week. But the app dropped my previous purchases ( I guess?) and didn’t restore when I clicked the restore button (but it listed the right ones, so I knew it was linking to them). I can’t find any of my previous maps. Awesome. Thanks, guys. You said the change in 2021 was “to better reflect the company’s current business model and plans for future growth.” If this is any indication, your current business model is to drive the company off a cliff. I’ll have to start looking for other apps. Too bad.

used this when it was guthook in 2016, it was great. same for CDT in 2017 and then the arizona trail. this app is almost unusable now. won’t load tracks or waypoints, constantly crashing back to the store screen. don’t waste your money on this - use gaia or another app if you’re going to go that route. wouldn’t even want to be using this on the AT. (barring the base functionality, it’s also a UX nightmare.)

I got a response below - deflecting responsibility. Sorry but the water site your app marked as potable were clearly marked on site as non- potable. This is only one example. I assume you try to get get free crowdsourcing of “tips” to maximize profit. Your customer service attitude is shameful- admit you blew it and fix the mistake before you land in a lawsuit. I have purchased maps before from Far Out and now they seems to be Far Out of touch. I wrote to tell them their maps were Far Out of the way and the some of the spots marked with available water did not have potable water which is a huge oversight for anyone who takes the maps seriously. The response I got from Far Out was not - wow - we are really sorry let us make it right but instead “ can’t help you try contacting Apple” . Very lame.
