Update 4-24-24: ProtonMail is absolutely driving me up the wall by not fixing the bug (feature?) where text goes off of the right of the device screen. I have to keep rotating my phone from portrait to landscape to see what I’m writing or even to find the cursor. Please fix this, it’s a critical flaw for an email app. If this app were a car it would be like having to sit in the passenger seat to see out the windshield at where you’re going and what else is on the road. Original review: I’ve been patient but ProtonMail continues to be an unreliable service and app for business use. Here are the main problems: 1) text goes off the screen in email authoring mode. Text should never, ever, ever go off of the screen. This is app development 101- the user should be able to see what’s written to them and what they’re writing to the recipient. The current way the author can’t see what they’re writing makes for a very clunky, almost unusable experience, with a great risk of typos which could be disastrous in a business environment, for example an extra or missing “0” in a dollar amount or the decimal point in the wrong place. 2) the app decides on its own after some updates to reverse my swipe action settings. So now some unknowable number of emails I intended to keep or permanently delete have had the exact opposite happen to them. Unforgivable for an email service to have unintended data loss! For these reasons I would not recommend using ProtonMail for business or critical email communications. For general personal email and spam catching it may be fine.
  • Love this app. Clean, easy to use. Missing 1 feature.

I love the simplicity of the app. It’s what I look for in a mail app. However, it is missing one crucial feature. I would love to be able to create mail filters on the mobile app. Currently, this is only possible on the web or desktop app.

For years the app was great, but the last few months it’s nearly impossible to delete anything from your inbox. Everything just shows back up again when you refresh it. Extremely annoying.

maybe I am missing something, since this is a new mail app for me. However, I am not receiving all of my emails. This is a problem I have not received any resolution from customer service. Therefore, I am not sure why this email service gets such good reviews, can someone explain?
  • I like it, but there needs to be a better system when people have multiple emails in one thread

For some reason, the proton product can make it literally impossible to find an email again. Let’s say there has been communication back and forth over a few emails with different people responding, there needs to be a better system because you can literally miss an email that has come to you. It’s complicated.
  • Dysfunctional

It’s definitely gotten better but the search option is still abysmal. It only searches for things on the subject line so unless you remember exactly what the subject was, you will never ever ever find the email you’re looking for. Why is there no option to search the email content too?
  • Major, basic formatting issue

When I am replying to an email and the phone is in portrait orientation, the text will fill the screen and then continue off-screen to the right without showing you the text or cursor. I would assume the app would either automatically follow your cursor and scroll right, or format into a new row appearance.
  • Phishing

I have never received the amount of phishing attempts on other email providers, as I have with proton. I don’t know how these fraudulent scammers are getting my email address, and I’m not sure how proton is allowing it.
