My boyfriend and I are learning French together. This app has really helped us get started. It’s teach us a lot of the basics to make traveling to France roll more smoothly. Our dream is to venture to France on mission trips. This is our walk in faith that someday we will get there.

This app has changed my learning confidence and I have been successfully increasing my understanding and learning ability. Little by little I have been taking on this new language. I get overwhelmed and bombarded easily so it’s great to be able to not be overloaded but given a load I can handle. Thank you Duolingo. I honestly mean that. 🙏 תודה רבה.
  • SCAM. Just don’t do it.

All the experts agree that it’s not a good way to learn a language. Plus, they offer a two week free trial every so often for the plus. That’s not the scam, the part where they don’t notify you like they promise and then renew for the entire year at midnight the day before instead of the (also outrageous) $20 a month rate is seriously unconscionable. I didn’t get much value out of this app when it was free, but now that they’ve drained me of $84 for a completely useless product I really hate it. I had been interested in trying the new math and music options to see if they were any better than the language ones, but now I’m going to be too disgusted to even use it. Just get a different language app. There are some really good ones out there. I’ve learned a lot more and much more useful stuff from the popular one with the yellow logo and a few others. This one is just plain not good.
  • Random odd sentences are ineffective in teaching language

The theory is they make the brain work harder, but they lack connection and context.
  • I wish I could turn off all updates forever.

DuoLingo has always been pretty fun and functional. If you are learning a popular Western language, the paid subscription may be worth it to you. If not, just use the free version and pay for a better app like Rosetta Dtone. I have always suspected that there were better language learning apps out there but I never had a desire to find one… until their last major update. I don’t like the new pathing or lesson layout. I had been saving up the final lesson from each grouping so I can use the XP bonuses strategically when I had the time. Now all those groups are showing completion. Also, the new layout takes up way more visual space… orders of magnitude more space to make you feel like you’ve come farther, I guess. Unsurprisingly they’ve added more ways to siphon off the gems as well. The whole app is very “meh” to me since I know what things used to look like. Underwhelming to say the least. In hindsight I should have turned away when they started enhancing the social media aspects more and more.

This app is a better use of time than just mindless social media binge. Take a few minutes each day and this will make you a better person. Even a toilet break or a bus ride can offer some learning. Good luck and God Bless
