  • Do not expect a gacha game

This is a visual novel at its core. Although there are combat and gacha features, it is by no means combat- or gacha-centric. If you play for anything but the characters, art, or story, you’re setting yourself up for disappointment. The character interactions (JP) are hilarious, the art is beautiful and uniquely styled, and the story is… well, so far it’s just alright, but I’ve heard Chapter 2 is really really good so I’m looking forward to it. Don’t expect a gacha game! Play it like a VN!!

I’m not sure how long this game is or how much it’ll cost me to complete it (so far I have spent over $200; I’m thinking it’ll cost me around $2k to actually complete the game. {Now, to completely 100% it, that is maximize all characters’ powers/potential would probably cost 10x what I can afford}. Hopefully not more than that). Enjoyable story; tearjerking moments have indeed wrung me out like a wet washcloth; the comedic moments are more cringey than anything, but I have genuinely laughed a couple of times; that being said comedic moments, good or bad, are a must in stories that deal with more serious and heartfelt moments, they allow juxtaposition and breathing space or reprieve for the reader. I’m impressed on how many characters actually have background stories. I enjoy the slice of life moments and interactions Not a fan of the level grinding, gacha pulling, resource managing, etc basically anything that takes me away from the visual novel aspects of the game and turns it into a costly slog just to get further along in the story portion of the game. I’m hoping this game will take a long time to complete in the way Clannad took a long time and not because of repetitive dungeon crawling gameplay.

Played this game and launch then dropped up and picked up again for the Angel Beats collaboration. Pros: The game has good visuals, voice acting is great, and this game is the closest people will get to turn based gameplay in a visual novel. Cons: Character progression is painstakingly slow. Too many character banners with extremely low drop rates. Too many copies required for character development. Game freezes when trying to claim rewards on start up. Game freezes after completing standby missions for character exp/materials and attempting to interact with other menus. Will have multiple events active at a time with varying duration. With all the events requiring a life points(farming resource with a limit of 5 and take hours to regenerate). There is not enough time to farm all the event rewards for single event if you wait for your points to regenerate naturally. Farming more than one is impossibility.

A beautiful story that will take you from keeling over laughing to bauling your eyes out. No one does it quite like Jun Maeda.

good story, great characters, and a very beginner friendly start! they even give you a months free pass for the extra items to show you the benefits instead of just expecting you to fork over cash like every other gacha, and that's enough to make me want to actually give them my money! thank you devs for the wonderful experience! RUKA NATION!!!!!

Heaven Burns Red is basically a free high quality visual novel with plenty of thought and care put into its characters and story. The primary gameplay of the game is reading, making dialogue choices, many of which are fun jokes, and experiencing the every day life of these characters who fight for humanity’s survival. The main scenario is written by Jun Maeda of Clannad and Angel Beats fame so expect emotional tension rivaling or even exceeding those works. There is a battle system that feels somewhat close to console RPGs. There is a frontline and backline of units with skills that you can choose to equip prior to a mission, and each round of a battle you select which ones to use based on your current SP level. You rotate people in and out of the frontline to manage who gets certain buffs, healing, attacking, or manage your shield levels. It gets fun to manage once you understand how it works and try to adapt to various circumstances. There’s basically no competitive system amongst players other than screenshotting damage/score attack numbers and sharing them, and events are archived after they run so you can feel free to play the game stress free at your own leisure. Definitely try to give the game shot if you get the chance.

I knew this game was popular in japan but had no idea what it was about. Never played a visual style novel based game and this was a great intro into the genre. Bottomlime, the writting and the music is TOP-TIER. If you are looking for a slower paced game that is intriguing with a story that will make you cry and want more? Give HBR a try!
